AGRICULTURE, LIVESTOCKS AND HALAL HUB

In recent years strong global demand for food and biofuels has been pushing crop and livestock prices higher. As crops and livestock are bringing in higher prices, agricultural land values have become increasingly valuable to investors. Prices have been rising surprisingly fast.

Thailand is also well known as World’s Halal Kitchen and has been boosted by new government’s funds and a five year strategic plan to promote halal food production and food standards to the world’s 1.9 Billion Muslim consumers.

Thailand government has clearly identified the growing market of halal export which worth THB 5.19bn in 2008, an increase of 53.3% from THB 3.38bn in 2007.

In 2009, the halal export surged to THB 8.36bn. THB 264million was earmarked to develop nine food production projects in five southern provinces as part of the Government’s ‘Thai Khem Khaeng’ stimulus program. Pattani, Yala , Naratiwat , Satun and Songkhla have been designated as production bases for halal products, for which the focus is on raw material for halal food production, including livestocks, fisheries, vegetables and fruits.

A world class standard halal laboratory, the Halal Science Center (HSC-CU) was set up in 2003 at Chulalongkorn University to test for prohibited, or haram substances in halal foods, becoming the first of its kind in the world.

Global Halal products market is estimated at US$2.8 trillion excluding Islamic banking with F&B (38%), pharmaceutical (23%), bakery products (13%), primary meat (11%), personal care & cosmetics (9%), nutraceutical (6%).
